Pastor Steve's Weekly Emessage
Well, summer is slowly coming to end.  I know, I know, the heat is still with us but school has started for some and it’s about to start for others.  The starting of school is the first indication that cooler weather is about 6 weeks away.  Most of us have had our vacation time and hopefully that was good and relaxing.  Now we can move back to the normal routines of life.

Last week I had the opportunity to go to Chicago for a Leadership Summit held at Willow Creek Community Church.  I went with 6 other senior ministers from Albuquerque.  The others were Lutherans, Baptists, one Church of Christ and I was the only United Methodist.  I enjoyed having the chance to visit with and get to know pastors from other denominations in Albuquerque.

Willow Creek Community Church was very interesting.  The Sanctuary (maybe auditorium is the correct word) could seat 7,000 people and it was packed for the Summit.  Willow Creek is one of those Mega Churches and was started by Bill Hybels who is still the senior minister.

I heard some wonderful speakers at the Summit.  I especially enjoyed author/minister Dr. John Ortberg; Harvard Professor Dr. Michael Porter; International filmmaker Richard Curtis who spoke about helping people in third world countries who have AIDS; Carly Fiorina who was the CEO of Hewlett-Packard from 1999 to 2005; former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former President Jimmy Carter.  I must say that Colin Powell was my favorite speaker.

There was a wealth of information and inspiration.  Over the next few months I will be sharing with you some of what I heard and what I felt.  I also want to tell you that this trip did not cost Central United Methodist Church anything.  It was fully funded from outside the church.

I was walking toward the van in the Willow Creek parking lot after one particularly inspirational session when I heard loud, angry voices behind me.  I turned and saw a couple yelling at one another.  Both the man and the woman were screaming terrible insults at each other and didn’t seem to care who heard them.  For a moment I remembered the Christian message that we had just heard and now this couple was treating each other with such loathing.  It reminded me that just hearing the Gospel doesn’t make us Christians or disciples.  We must live our faith.  This week may we connect with Jesus and may we truly live out our faith with other people.

I hope to see you this Sunday as we worship together.

Peace,

Steve
